Kenya Water Relief Project
This project involves the construction of small-scale water dams and water tanks to improve access to clean water.
History
Quest was approached by Excellent Development to work alongside them help fund the building of sand dams in the rural region of Machakos, south of Nairobi. After an initial project visit in 2004 Quest immediately saw the potential for volunteer teams to provide not only financial help to build the dams, but also physical support in actually constructing them. Since then six teams of volunteers have worked and lived within the local community.. Objectives
To work with charity partner Excellent Development to enable disadvantaged communities in Africa to transform their environment sustainably and improve water supplies, food production, health and incomes. Achievements
- Constructed 8 large sand dams (potentially supporting 10,000 villagers)
- Extended or repaired 12 sand dams
- Built 2 water tanks
- Planted over 100 saplings in local schools
- Organised 4 Environmental Education Programmes with local school
- Provided ongoing funding for employment of extension workers to carry on work, to provide seeds for local communities and for other activities as required by local community.
Future Plans
Quest will endeavour to construct and repair as many dams as possible each year by sending out teams at all appropriate times of the year (not during the short rainy seasons). Quest are keen to develop environmental education programmes initiated in 2005 to create educational packs that can be used across all projects that the Trust supports.
