Bolivia Animal Sanctuary Project

"We aim to protect and conserve vulnerable animals' endangered habitats and areas of scientific and ecological importance"

Caring for injured animals in the Bolivian Amazon

Working with Inti Wara Yassi this project protects, rehabilitates, and where possible re-releases into the wild animals that have been rescued from ill treatment and inhumane captivity.Country Profile - Bolivia

What's the problem? Animals in Bolivia are often kept illegally, exotic animals are traded on the black market with little care as to their well being, they have often been abused which can result in permanent disabilities meaning that they would die without our help.

Jon talks about Ambue Ari and the essential need for a buffer zone around the park.

How Quest4Change helps: We have been working with Inti Wara Yassi since 2003, providing much needed financial and volunteer support. Volunteers have spent thousands of man hours caring for, feeding and rehabilitating 1,000 of rescued animals from Monkeys to Pumas. When re-release into the wild is not a possibility our aim is to make their lives as comfortable as possible through the construction of bespoke cages.

“Building cages in Jacj Cuisi felt very worthwhile, especially after getting to meet the animals in Machia.”                 Chris Bentley, Volunteer Bolivia 2009

In 2009 Inti Wara Yassi has managed to secure their fifth sanctuary site Jacj Cuisi. Covering 300 hectares this is as a direct result of Quest volunteer donations to the project and means that more animals can be protected and rehabilitated.

The first volunteer group in 2009 completed new cages for Lishou and Simba, two rescued Pumas who have been flown into their new homes.  The second team of volunteers to head out to Bolivia in 2009 worked hard constructing and helping to establish the new sanctuary Jacj Cuisi.

Achievement's (Updated Dec 2009)

  • Purchased 600 hectares of an 800 hectare plot of rainforest to create a new animal sanctuary
  • Sponsored 1000 acres of rainforest through partners Rainforest Concern
  • Built 15 large animal enclosures and cages
  • Spent over 11,000 hours working with and caring for animals
  • Donation for medical supplies for the veterinary clinic
  • Renovation of the volunteer accommodation
  • Began construction of a new veterinary clinic at Ambue Ari
  • Helping in construction of Aviary
