Brazil Coastal Rainforest Project

This project helps to protect the devastated Atlantic Coastal Rainforest by working with community grassroots associations.

History

Quest joined conservation specialists Fauna and Flora International and local Brazilian NGO Amainan Brasil in 2005 to help protect the endangered forests. Since then Quest has continued to work directly with Amainan on various social projects which continue year round.

Objectives

Amainan’s main objective is to preserve the native forests and mangrove areas of Cairu. In order to achieve this, Amainan and Quest have built partnerships with local groups and associations with the aim of increasing awareness amongst the communities about their environment and the importance to live in a sustainable way.

Achievements
  • Planted and mapped over 2000 treesCountry Profile - Brazil
  • Constructed a floating research centre
  • Employed 3 capoeira teachers to instruct hundreds of local children for two years
  • Funded a space for the community carpentry
  • Provided tools and materials for the community carpentry
  • Supported the local theatre group
  • Renovated and repaired the Amainan ‘Theatre’ Boat
  • Provided safety equipment for the Amainan ‘Theatre’ Boat
  • Taught 90 local people English through informal English classes
  • Provided income for 20 families through a replanting and tree adoption programme
  • Provided training and jobs for members of the local community.
Future Plans

Amainan, Quest and the local associations are working towards increasing awareness and continuing to safeguard the fragile Coastal Atlantic Forest amongst communities in the Tinhare Archipelagos. Working with the coastal communities of Brazil is integral to conserving the Atlantic Rainforest and providing training and alternative livelihood opportunities. The preservation of the local environment is key for the future success of this project.
